How our budget notes work

All costs are illustrative planning estimates in US dollars. They are not live prices, retailer quotes or a promise that a meal will cost the same in your location.

Recipe cost and shopping cost

Recipe cost refers to the quantity used: one tablespoon of oil, for example, rather than a full bottle. Buying all packages from scratch will usually cost more. Servings and per-serving estimates are shown alongside the whole recipe estimate.

Small allowances cover oil and seasonings. Optional toppings and side dishes are excluded unless listed. Taxes, delivery and energy costs are not included.

Make your own estimate

Divide a package price by its quantity, multiply by the amount used, then add the ingredient costs. Compare store brands and check pantry supplies before shopping.
